mod_fcgid: stderr: PHP Fatal error: Class 'DOMDocument' not found in

I was trying to install Kunena, a Joomla forum extension when I ran into this little issue.

Turned out I was missing php-xml from my installation.

So I ran

yum install php-xml
and then
service httpd restart

And continued the installation successfully! :)

I'll leave this here in case anyone has a similar error

Mount a .dmg on macosx using only the terminal

If you need to mount a .dmg file without gui access use the following command:
$ hdiutil attach <filename>.dmg -verbose

Dreamhost back up!

Yay! :)

Looks like Dreamhost is back online after their network outage today.

Hurray!

Here is an excerp from their status blog explaining the issue:
Update on October 21, 2010 @ 10:34 PM, PST: Word back from our admins is that the issue is routing based.  Amongst the assorted problems springing from this is a significant amount of packet loss.  That’s why some folks can see things just fine while others are having really bad problems.  We’re getting really close to cracking this nut — although we still don’t have an ETA — but we thought you’d still like to know what’s going on.
Update on October 21, 2010 @ 10:52 PM, PST: A side effect of the outage has been the violent thrashing of our internal load balancers. Naturally, this made our problems even worse. We’ve leveled those out now and continue to push forward until our networking is back to normal. More updates coming soon!
Update on October 21, 2010 @ 10:59 PM, PST: And we’re back! Apparently, this whole fiasco was caused by a bug in Cisco’s VSS operating system. Sorry that it was so hard for our team to pin down! They’re on standby now tho and will continue to watch the network to make sure nothing goes pear shaped again. If you are still seeing issues, please contact our support team as soon as possible!

Dreamhost Down?

Looks like DreamHost is having a domain wide blackout.

Several of my servers have disappeared in the last hour.

No news yet regarding the issue.

Will keep everyone updated as news comes in.

EDIT: They have attributed Network related issues to the root cause of the outage.

Zentyal formerly eBox Platform - Linux Small Business Server

Zentyal, is a UTM like linux distro based on Ubuntu. Zentyal is the new name for the distro eBox after it was formerly renamed in August 2010. It is similar to other offerings such as Untangle and ClearOS

According to their site,
"Zentyal can act as a Gateway, Infrastructure Manager, Unified Threat Manager, Office Server, Unified Communication Server or a combination of them. One single, easy-to-use platform to manage all your network services."
This makes it an ideal solution for small/medium sized businesses(SMBs) to deploy in their offices as a single device by relatively non technical individuals. These functionalities are tightly integrated, automating most tasks, avoiding mistakes and saving time for system administrators. Traditionally this kind of functionality would be hobbled together by IT consultants and would run across multiple systems which introduces complexity and stability concerns.

I have deployed earlier eBox incarnations and have been very happy with their design and performance.

Recently, they released a new version further strengthening their product offering. According to the press release that accompanied the release,

Zentyal 2.0 is based on the new Ubuntu 10.4 LTS distribution and this has implied a major change in all the server components. For this reason, Zentyal 2.0 is a new major release. With this change, the users are ensured higher levels of security, functionality and hardware compatibility.

Besides updating the Zentyal base, this version features significant usability, performance and stability improvements. Additionally, it also includes new features. With the goal of providing a Linux server that can be fully configured through a simple graphical interface, software management improvements have taken place and automatic configuration wizards have been introduced.

I'm keen to test it out and will post my results when I get a chance. In the meantime, check it out yourself and let me know what you think!

What is OpenStack

OpenStack is an open source cloud implementation. It allows any organization to create and offer cloud computing capabilities using open source software running on standard hardware. RACKSPACE and NASA are joined by leaders from across the technology industry like CITRIX, DELL, NTT DATA, RIGHTSCALE and others to drive a deployable, totally open cloud solution.

The OpenStack framework is written using PHP, and Swift, for scalable distributed object store. Swift features object, container, account, auth, and proxy services based on code from hoster Rackspace.

Ubuntu is set to include the technology in its next release as an alternative to their popular Eucalyptus platform. source

How to enable Root password on Ubuntu

Ubuntu is one of the few Linux distributions out there that will not enable the root account.If you want to do something with root permission on the console you have to type sudo before the command.

sudo” means superuser do. “sudo” will prompt for “Password:”. Please specify user password

As you have noticed during the Ubuntu installation there was no question about the root password, as you might have been used to see during other Linux distribution installation process.Because of this your root accout is inactive.

If you want to enable root account (which is not recommended) enter the following command.

$sudo passwd root

This will prompt for a new root password and once you confirm it, you can start using the root account to login.

If you want to disable root account in ubuntu you need to lock the root account by using the following command

$sudo passwd -l root

If you want to work on a root console you’d better use the following command

$sudo -i

SpringSource - STS Roo and GWT

Spring Roo is the fastest way for Java developers to build Spring-based applications in the Java programming language. With the Roo 1.1.0.M1 you can build working web applications – complete with a Google Web Toolkit (GWT) front end – in as little as 200 keystrokes!

I've been developing a few test applications recently and am very impressed with this framework. Highly recommended.

Netspace DNS Down

Australian ISP Netspace has hit trouble again today with its core DNS servers down for the majority of the day and a resolution still not in sight. Many people have expressed their anger on Australia's leading Broadband forum, Whirlpool.net.au. More than 350 posts have been made in the thread here this afternoon after many have resorted to using other public DNS servers such as Google's and OpenDNS.

This fault comes just days after many customers in Tasmania were left without connections for days on end.

For a list of Australian DNS servers check out Sam Kendall's blog at http://blog.samkendall.net/2010/03/18/australian-isp-dns-servers/

EDIT: As Allen Wayne, has commented below, Netspace's DNS have indeed come back online.

Google Chrome not rendering CSS in AdWords and AdSense

Ran into a strange error today...
Chrome failed to render css on Google's very own sites, in particular AdWords and AdSense. Found the following Google discussion here discussing the very issue. I have replicated the issue on both Google's Chrome browser for Windows 7 and  Linux. Other browsers such as Firefox, Opera, and Safari appear to render the pages correctly.

It seems some of the CSS files are loaded and parsed but never applied to the current window. To date no solution has been found. It is not known if this affects other sites but upon a quick search it appears it may be.

Scrollable HTML table plugin for jQuery

This jQuery/javascript library can be used to convert tables in ordinary HTML into scrollable ones. No additional coding is necessary. All you need to do is put header rows (if you need them) in THEAD section, table body rows in TBODY section, footer rows (if you need them) in TFOOT section.

Check it out here

EDIT: Ive managed to get this working in Firefox and IE thus far but Chrome doesn't render the scoll bars correctly. I will post an update to this with the working code as soon as possible. - Matt

80 port USB hub launched

Just announced is an 80 port USB Hub which can power up to 80 separate devices at once. It costs US$165 but unfortunately it doesn't allow USB data transfers so is limited in uses from that standpoint. Also you can only imagine what a mess all the wiring would cause with a device such as this!

How to sync an Ipod with Ubuntu 10.04 using GTKpod and ifuse

Note: This info is pretty old now. Im not entirely confident it still works for everyone. If anyone has any better means of achieving this let me know. Since Ubuntu

This how to should work for most generations of Ipods, iTouch and iPhones barr the iPhone 4 and all versions of Ubuntu including Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Linux Mint

If you don't have GTKpod installed do:
$ sudo apt-get install GTKpod

You will need to manually mount the device to /mnt/ipod using ifuse.
If you don't have ifuse installed do:
$ sudo apt-get install ifuse

Then:
$ sudo mkdir /mnt/ipod
$ sudo chmod 777 /mnt/ipod

Ok, now if you want to use your iPhone with GTKpod you will need to mount and umount it manually everytime.
To mount (the just launch GTKpod and let it read the device):
$ ifuse /mnt/ipod

Make sure you unmount inside GTKpod when you're done and then issue this command:
$ fusermount -u /mnt/ipod

More information can be found on the Ubuntu Help documentation here

JQuery Rounded Corners Library

Stumbled upon this Javascript library today while setting out a front end for a mates datalogging web application.

http://www.malsup.com/jquery/corner/

Really simple to use just include the js file along with the existing JQuery library to your page and set out your elements like normal. Anything that you want to add a rounded edge or similar effect, add this to your script:
$(document).ready(function(){
     //add 30px radius corner
    $('#myElementID').corner("30px");
});
